Top 10 Safest Cars in India under Rs.10 Lakhs Budget

Safety is no longer a back-burner priority for new-car shoppers. Across most types of vehicle shoppers, it’s one of the top concerns.

Many families, as we recommend, start their shopping process by weeding out potential vehicles that simply don’t make the cut in occupant safety.

However, in 2015 that’s less straightforward than it’s been in the past.

10 ) Tata Zest XT

ABS EBD with CSC (Corner Stability Control), Dual Airbags, Projector Headlights for better night visibility, Speed Sensitive Door Lock, Fog Lights in Front & Rear along with Steel Braces in Rear Seats

9 ) Toyota Etios

Equipment: Airbags (2), ABS + EBD

Much like its hatchback sibling (Liva), the Etios is on our list, thanks to the recent inclusion of dual airbags on all of its variants. While the two airbags up front make the car safer, but the absence of ABS on lower variants isn't as reassuring. The car is available in both petrol and diesel versions, and offers a good amount of space, too. The ride is comfortable while the handling isn't too bad either.

8 ) Honda Jazz

Equipment: Airbags (2), ABS + EBD

The Honda Jazz received a score of 36.58 out of a possible 37, which is a fantastic result” said Honda Australia Director, Stephen Collins.

“The Jazz was also the first vehicle to be tested using data shared with ANCAP’s sister program, ASEAN NCAP in Malaysia.” said Collins. ANCAP recently began sharing crash test data with ASEAN NCAP; both have been working closely for the past few years. The new Jazz scored well in all of ANCAP’s test categories. But, while the Australian Jazz gets safety kit like six airbags and electronic stability control as standard, it needs to be seen how much safety kit will trickle down to the Indian markets.

With road and vehicle safety gaining significant importance in India too, it is likely that Honda will equip atleast the top trims of the Jazz with considerable safety features (even if not all of them). What seems certain though, is that Honda will bet big on the Jazz’s strengths of space, comfort and practicality, and also load it with more features and fitments this time. It is also expected to be priced very competitively, to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai i20.

7 ) Skoda Fabia

Adult Safety: 4
Child Safety: 3
Pedestrian Safety: 2

Dual (front) and side airbags, EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) are the most stunning features of this hatchback. One of the additional safety features in this hatchback is the intelligent seat-belt, fitted to the driver seat. Fabia is said to be the best driver-friendly car on the road.

In addition to the ABS brakes, Fabia is also equipped with MSR engine brakes. MSR brakes enable the control over the brakes during critical times.

In terms of impacts from the side, Fabia has been rated as the best car on the Indian roads.

6 ) Ford Fiesta

Adult Safety: 5
Child Safety: 4
Pedestrian Safety: 3

The makers of this hatchback carried out more than 350 tests on its safety precautions. Amongst all these tests, most of them came positive.

Dual airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution (EBD) are the sole reasons behind the ranking of Ford Fiesta. The dual airbags provides more safety by cutting the influence of collision and there is no doubt about this. To ensure, the airbags works fit and fine at lower speed, several tests were carried out and all of their results proved a safe rescue for the passengers. This kind of impact is very common on the Indian roads.

Fiesta comes with specially designed bumpers. Both of its bumpers are designed in order to provide the best safety level to the pedestrians in extreme cases.

5 ) Volkswagen Polo

Price: Rs 6.05 lakh (Polo 1.2 Petrol Highline)
Rs 8.81 lakh (Vento 1.6 Petrol Highline)
Rs 8.39 lakh (Rapid 1.6 Petrol Elegance)
Equipment: Airbags (2), ABS + EBD

The Volkswagen Polo is the smallest car on offer from the German auto giant Volkswagen in India. The car boasts of a solid build quality and typical German engineering, which is quite reassuring especially when considering safety.

The Polo is Volkswagen's global small car and boasts of a 5-star NCAP rating similar to the Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20. It comes with two airbags, ABS and EBD as standard on the Highline variant, similar to the Swift and Micra Active. Size, features and specification wise the Polo lies in the same category as the Swift, yet it is noticeably more expensive.

Why, you may ask is the Volkswagen Polo featured in this list of ours? Well, its simple. The Volkswagen offers peace of mind with its immaculate build quality. The Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20 may be put together well, but Volkswagen's Polo is in a different league altogether. Going by the rule of thumb, things put together well generally fare better when it crashed at highway speeds.

Like Suzuki, Volkswagen too produces sedans based on the Polo platform. Unlike the Swift DZire though, the sedans based on the Polo aren't notchbacks. The Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento boast of better safety than the hatchback and come with much of the same safety kit. The only downside to this being the increase in cost is fairly large over the hatchback, but given the build quality of these cars, its well worth it.

The Volkswagen quality is what may have put the Polo on our list of safest cars in India, but it isn't the only reason. The Polo may demand a higher price, but its a well thought of and well put together car, not to mention feature packed and a delight to drive.

4 ) Hyundai i20

Price: Rs 6.86 lakh (Asta [O])
Equipment: Airbags (6), ABS + EBD

The Hyundai i20 has put itself on the map as being one of the best hatchbacks in the country, unfortunately not for the reasons it features on this list. However, the i20 is definitely one of the more feature packed cars in the India, especially when it comes to safety kit.

The Hyundai i20 is the cheapest car in the country that provides six airbags, ABS and EBD. Similar to the Ford EcoSport, the i20 comes with the standard driver and passenger airbags, curtain airbags and even side impact airbags that are in the two front seats of the car. The variant of the i20 in which this kit is available may be the most expensive small hatchback you can buy in the country, but the car does come loaded with features seen only in luxury cars.

In terms of safety, the car has received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, but as usual we aren't just considering safety, but an overall package with safety built into it. Here's where the i20 shines, being the most feature packed car in its price bracket in terms of infotainment, technology and safety.

The i20 is the 'best all rounder' in our list of the safest cars in India.

3 ) Nissan Micra Active

Price: Rs 4.71 lakh (XV S)
Equipment: Airbags (2), ABS + EBD

If you're on a budget but don't want to compromise on safety, the Micra Active is for you. It is the cheapest car currently on sale in the country that offers two airbags, ABS and EBD. This makes it a winner for us, proving that there are those out there who think safety is a necessity rather than a luxury.

The Micra Active was born out of some clever cost cutting ideas by Nissan. The car is essentially a no frills version of the Micra, but comes with the necessary safety features at a price that no other manufacturer in India can match. The car boasts of a 4-star Euro NCAP rating and comes with two airbags, ABS and EBD, much like other cars on this list. Moreover, the Micra Active doesn't compromise on the few main parameters that make it a good car and not just a safe car.

The Micra Active features on this list because of its budget approach to making a safe car. Moreover, lacking a few high end features doesn't seem to hurt as much when considering the amazing price at which the Micra Active is being offered at by Nissan.

2 ) Ford EcoSport

Price: Rs 8.29 lakh (1.5 Petrol Titanuim +)
Equipment: Airbags (6), ABS + EBD

The Ford EcoSport is the newest car that features on our list of the safest cars in India. The most publicised feature of the EcoSport may be its price, but we feel the safety aspect needed a bit of a mention.

The EcoSport is one of only two cars in the country to feature six airbags in the sub Rs 10 lakh price bracket. The Titanium + version of the car that comes fully loaded with the safety features isn't a compromise between safety kit and luxury. Coming with the regular driver and passenger airbags, the car also has side impact protection airbags placed in the front seats and curtain airbags above the windows. ABS and EBD come as standard, because prevention is always better than cure.

The impressive array of safety kit on the car help it get a 4-star Euro NCAP rating. Safety alone on the EcoSport impresses, but the car has a whole lot to show apart from it. It's loaded with features that are available on the most expensive Ford cars like SYNC and Emergency Assistance that will even report a breakdown or accident to the authorities without you telling it to.

Because safety isn't just about how safe a car can keep its occupants in the event of an accident, we feel the hands-free and assistance features too play an important role – preventing accidents by reducing the number of distractions for the driver.

All this and more make the Ford EcoSport the 'best VFM' buy in our list of the safest cars in India. The EcoSport has a thousand features that have made it a huge hit, and safety is definitely one of them.

1 ) Suzuki Swift

Equipment: Airbags (2), ABS + EBD

The Suzuki Swift is the 'no brainer' in our list of the safest cars in India. Being one of the best selling cars in the country, the Swift has proved its versatility in terms of efficiency, performance and styling. But what really puts it on the list is how safe it is.

The Swift is a global model produced by Japanese auto giant Suzuki, which means it has to adhere to the strict safety norms put in place by the EU. Apart from the construction of the chassis with crumple zones and impact beams the top end of the Suzuki Swift comes with driver and passenger airbags, ABS and EBD as standard fitments. With the same safety equipment in the EU version of the car, the Swift has received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating which is considered to be the most demanding safety accreditation institution.
One of the few car that surpasses the Swift hatchback in terms of sales in India is the Swift DZire notchback based on it. The Swift DZire uses the same underpinnings as the hatchback version, only with the added benefit of a large boot at the rear. In terms of safety then, the DZire is probably a notch above the hatchback version considering the extra protection provided by the boot in the event of a rear end collision.

The top-end variant of the DZire too gets two airbags, ABS and EBD as standard fitments.

The reason the Suzuki Swift family of cars are 'no brainers' in our list of safe cars is because they are complete packages, not just in terms of safety, but also performance, styling, affordability, build quality and service.
